Can I claim back on a OT tax code?

Hi everyone,
I recently noticed that I was placed on an OT tax code, and I’ve heard this usually means you’re taxed at a higher rate because there’s no personal allowance applied. I’m wondering if anyone has experience with this — can you claim back the extra tax once your tax code is corrected? How long does HMRC take to issue a refund, and do they do it automatically, or do I need to apply for it? Any advice from people who dealt with an OT tax code before would be really helpful.

Certainly, if you have been subjected to an 0T tax code and have thus overpaid, then it is very probable that you will be able to recover some tax. The 0T tax code implies that no tax-free Personal Allowance was provided to you, thereby leading to taxation on your entire income, which could often result in over-taxing unless you are in a situation of having more than one income source utilizing your allowance.

Yes. An OT tax code means you’re taxed without personal allowances, often due to missing information. If you’ve overpaid, you can claim a tax refund from HMRC. Update your details, submit a self-assessment if required, or contact HMRC to correct your tax code and recover any excess deductions.
