Can someone explain how the Child Tax Credit works for 2025? I’ve heard there might be changes in the credit amount and eligibility rules. Who qualifies for it, how much can parents claim per child, and what’s the process for filing or receiving payments? Any insights on income limits or differences from last year would be really helpful.

The Child Tax Credit (CTC), which is refundable up to $1,600 through the Additional Child Tax Credit, remains at $2,000 per eligible child under the age of 17. Although lawmakers have debated its expansion, neither a new increase nor complete refundability have been passed as of yet. Since regulations can change in the middle of the year, always check the IRS website again before filing.

During the 2025 tax year (which means the taxes will be filed in early 2026), the Child Tax Credit that the IRS will allow has been increased to a whopping $2,200 per qualifying child, which is an increase from the previous year's $2,000 limit. A major new stipulation that comes with this situation is the fact that both the child and the taxpayer (or at least one spouse for joint filers) are required to have a work-eligible Social Security Number (SSN).

For 2025, the Child Tax Credit allows eligible parents to claim up to $2,000 per child under 17, with up to $1,500 potentially refundable. Eligibility generally depends on income, filing status, and the child’s age and relationship. Parents can claim it when filing their tax return, and payments are issued as part of the refund. Income limits and credit amounts have slightly adjusted from last year, so it’s important to check current IRS guidelines.
