New York State says that all tax returns must be e-filed and that paper filings won’t be accepted. They also mention that e-filing to the state is free and included in the cost of tax software like TurboTax. Is this actually true? When filing a New York State return through TurboTax, does it automatically include e-filing, or do you still have to pay extra for that feature?

E-filing New York State tax returns allows taxpayers to file electronically through the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website or approved tax software. It’s faster, more accurate, and provides instant confirmation. Eligible filers can use Free File options, and refunds are processed more quickly than paper filings.

Electronic filing The required, cost-free electronic filing of your personal income tax returns using authorized software or online services is known as New York State Returns. Commercial software, the state's Direct File for qualified filers, and the Free File for qualified lower-income taxpayers are among the options. If you use tax preparation software, you must e-file.

E-filing New York State returns allows taxpayers to submit their state income tax forms online through approved e-file providers or the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website. It’s fast, secure, and helps ensure quicker refunds and fewer filing errors.

  • With TurboTax: If you are using the desktop/download version the state e-file fee is waived for New York State returns (“E-file fees do not apply to New York state returns”). ttlc.intuit.com+2ttlc.intuit.com+2
  • With the online version of TurboTax, you still pay for the “state preparation” portion (software cost) if you are filing a state return; however the actual e-file of the NYS return has no separate fee. ttlc.intuit.com

In summary: Yes — when filing a New York State return through TurboTax, the e-filing of the NY return is included (no extra e-file fee) under NY law. You still pay for the software access/“state return” if required, but not for the NY state e-file itself.

The tax return of the state of New York is possible to be filed online utilising approved software or using the free system of the state. The state dictates that the majority of people are obliged to file e-forms, and you should not be asked to pay an additional fee to do so in electronic format.

  1. The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, 2012.
  2. Certified software vendors of tax (e.g., TurboTax, TaxSlayer) or
