How do travel agents make money?

I’m curious how do travel agents make money today. Do travel agents earn income from commissions or service fees? Is becoming a travel agent still profitable?

Travel agents mainly make money through commissions from hotels, airlines, and tour operators, plus service fees for planning trips. It can still be profitable, especially if you build loyal clients or specialize in niche travel.

The travel agents receive majorly supplier commissions during the hotels, cruise and tour operators (commission is usually 10-20 per cent). They also impose service or consultation fee on clients when they prepare custom itineraries and research and they occasionally charge a markup on wholesale net rates on holiday packages.
