How much can an insurance agent earn?

I’m considering becoming an insurance agent and want to understand the income potential. How much can an insurance agent earn in the first year versus after gaining experience? Does it mostly depend on commission, or is there usually a base salary? I’d love to hear from agents about realistic expectations rather than just top-performer numbers.

An insurance agent’s earnings vary widely:
  • Entry-level agents: ₹15,000–₹30,000 per month.
  • Experienced agents: ₹50,000–₹1,50,000+ per month, often commission-based.
  • Top performers: Can earn several lakhs per month depending on sales and policies sold.
Income depends on experience, product type, company, and client base.

An insurance agent’s income can vary a lot depending on experience, location, and the type of policies they sell; beginners may earn a modest base salary or mainly commissions, while experienced agents who build a strong client base can earn a high income through commissions and renewals, with top performers making significantly more than average.

Insurance agent earnings vary widely. In India, beginners may earn about ₹1.1–₹4.7 lakh/year, mid-level ₹4–8 lakh, and experienced agents ₹8–15 lakh+ depending on sales and commissions.
Typical commissions are 10–25% of new policy premiums plus 5–10% renewals, so income can grow over time.

An insurance agent’s earnings vary widely by experience, location, and sales success. Many earn a base salary plus commissions on policies sold. Entry-level agents might earn ₹2–5 lakh annually in India, while experienced agents can earn ₹10 lakh+ or more. Top performers sometimes earn significantly higher through renewals and bonuses.
