Does anyone know if pet tax deductions 2025 are allowed? Can I claim vet bills, food, or pet insurance under current tax laws? I’ve heard some cases allow deductions for service animals or pets used for business. Any clarity on what’s actually deductible this year would help

Such daily costs as food, veterinary, or pet insurance can not be deductible in 2025, but you can deduct the pet in case it is an approved service or business animal.

Generally speaking, no, you cannot deduct the costs of a personal pet from your taxes. Nonetheless, if your pet is a certified service animal, a working animal for a company, a performance animal that generates revenue, or a foster animal for an approved charity, you may be eligible for a deduction.

For 2025, you can’t claim tax deductions for regular pet expenses like food or vet bills. However, costs for pets used in business (e.g., guard dogs) or donations to registered animal charities may qualify for limited tax relief.

In most cases pets cannot be listed as dependents, but unless otherwise you are allowed some limited deductions provided that:

  1. Pet is a therapeutic or service animal.
  2. You raise animals on non-profit basis.
  3. Pet belongs to business (e.g., security dog).
  4. Vet receipts and registration are to be kept.

In 2025, most pet expenses like food, grooming, and regular vet care aren’t tax-deductible. However, you may claim deductions if your pet serves a business purpose (like a guard dog), provides medical assistance as a service animal, or works in therapy or entertainment. Keep all receipts and proper documentation to support your claim with the IRS.
