I was asked to submit a form and I don’t fully understand what is a W9 tax form. Is it required for freelancers only, or do regular employees need it too?

A W-9 is mostly for independent contractors. Companies use it to collect your tax info so they can report payments to the IRS. Regular employees usually fill out a W-4 instead.

W-9 form is a document of the IRS that is utilized by the business to obtain a freelancer or a contractor Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). It guarantees the reporting of income on the 1099 forms.

Imagine that the IRS is saying, "Hey, we need some of your information and then we can send you back the money... or we can demand it back! Freelancers have it and employees do not unless your boss suddenly realizes that you are an undercover contractor ninja.
