I’m trying to understand what is in payroll tax and which deductions are mandatory.
Does it include Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment taxes?
How do employers calculate and report these taxes correctly?

Payroll tax refers to taxes employers and employees pay on wages. It typically includes Social Security, Medicare, and sometimes unemployment taxes. Employers withhold a portion from employees’ salaries and may also contribute their own share. These taxes fund government programs such as pensions, healthcare, and unemployment benefits.

Payroll tax is money an employer withholds from employees’ wages and pays to the government for social programs like Social Security and Medicare. Employers often match part of this tax, making it both an employee and employer obligation.

Payroll tax consists of social security and Medicare (FICA) which are both shared by employers and employees. Employers also pay the Federal (FUTA) and State (SUTA) unemployment taxes. Income Tax withholding is also a major payroll deduction although it is usually used in conjunction with other deductions.
