I keep hearing the term and was wondering, what is martial law exactly? As far as I know, it refers to the temporary imposition of military authority over normal civil functions during emergencies. Can someone provide a simple explanation with examples of when martial law has been declared in history?

Martial law is the temporary imposition of direct military control over normal civilian functions, typically during emergencies such as war, rebellion, or natural disasters. Under martial law, civil liberties may be restricted, and military authorities replace civil institutions. It is usually declared to restore order, but it raises concerns about democracy and citizens’ constitutional rights.

Martial law is when the military takes control over normal government functions, usually during emergencies like war, riots, or natural disasters. From what I’ve read and seen in history, it often means curfews, restricted movement, and suspension of regular civil rights until order is restored.
