I keep hearing the term and was wondering, what is martial law exactly? As far as I know, it refers to the temporary imposition of military authority over normal civil functions during emergencies. Can someone provide a simple explanation with examples of when martial law has been declared in history?

Martial law is the temporary imposition of direct military control over normal civilian functions, typically during emergencies such as war, rebellion, or natural disasters.
