Can you name some resource rich but economically backward regions?

Can anyone share examples of regions that have abundant natural resources but are still economically backward or underdeveloped? I’m trying to understand why some places with minerals, oil, forests, or other resources struggle with economic growth. What are some well-known examples and the reasons behind this situation?

A few well-known examples are the Democratic Republic of Congo, Venezuela, and parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, which have huge natural resources like minerals, oil, and forests, but still struggle economically due to issues like political instability, corruption, and poor infrastructure.

Some resource-rich but economically backward regions include Democratic Republic of the Congo, rich in minerals like cobalt and diamonds; Chhattisgarh, rich in coal and iron ore; and Jharkhand, known for large mineral resources but facing development challenges.

Some resource-rich but economically backward regions, where lots of natural resources do not equal riches in the nations where they are found.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo: Massive resources of minerals (cobalt, diamonds) and abject poverty.
Venezuela: World oil fields, but is experiencing a massive economic meltdown.
Jharkhand, India: It is a land of coal and iron and boasts a low level of development.

Some regions are rich in natural resources but remain economically underdeveloped due to poor infrastructure, conflict, or weak governance. Examples include the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has vast mineral wealth but faces political instability, and Chhattisgarh, rich in minerals yet with many poor rural areas. Parts of Nigeria with large oil reserves and the Amazon Basin are also examples where resources exist but economic development remains limited.

Examples include Democratic Republic of the Congo (rich in cobalt and diamonds), Chhattisgarh (minerals and forests), Jharkhand (coal and iron ore), and Niger Delta—all resource-rich yet facing poverty due to weak infrastructure, conflict, or poor governance.
