How many breaks in a 8-hour shift by law?

I wanted to understand the legal rules around work breaks. If someone is working an 8-hour shift, how many breaks are they entitled to by law? Is there a minimum duration for these breaks, like lunch or rest breaks? Also, does this vary depending on the country or type of job? For example, are there different rules for office employees vs. factory workers?

The laws around work breaks vary depending on the country and type of job, but generally, an 8-hour shift is supposed to include a certain number of breaks. In many places, workers are entitled to a 30-minute lunch break and a couple of 15-minute rest breaks throughout the day. For example, in the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act doesn't specify a certain number of breaks, but it does require that workers be paid for breaks of 20 minutes or less. Factory workers may have different rules than office employees due to the physical demands of their jobs, and some countries have stricter laws around work breaks than others.

It depends on the country/state, but generally:
  • India: No fixed “number” of breaks, but under the Factories Act, 1948, workers must get at least a 30-minute break after 5 hours of work.
  • U.S.: No federal law requiring breaks, but many states require 1 meal break (30 mins) and sometimes short rest breaks.
So in an 8-hour shift, typically 1 meal break + 1–2 short breaks (depending on local laws).

In India, an 8-hour shift legally requires at least one break, typically a 30-minute rest after about 5 hours of work. Extra breaks depend on company policy.

Breaks from the law within 8 hours are determined based on geographic location. The federal law does not make breaks mandatory in the USA, although most states demand 30 minutes of breaks with meals included in some states. In the UK, employees are entitled to a minimum rest break of 20 minutes after six hours.

In most countries, employees working an 8-hour shift are entitled to at least one break. In India, labor laws generally require a 30-minute break after five hours of continuous work. Additional short breaks may depend on company policy rather than strict legal requirements

In India, under the Factories Act, an 8-hour shift generally includes at least one 30-minute rest break after 4–5 hours of continuous work. Additional short breaks depend on company policy, industry type, and employment contract terms or state labour rules.
