How to void a check?

I need to void a check for setting up direct deposit. What’s the correct way to void a check without risking it being misused? Should I write anything else besides "VOID"? Please guide me step-by-step.

Voiding a check prevents it from being cashed or deposited. It's often done if you make a mistake while writing it, or if you need to provide your bank account information (like for direct deposit setup) without actually making a payment.

To void a check, write “VOID” across the front in large letters using a permanent ink pen. Ensure it’s clearly visible and doesn’t obscure any critical information. Avoid using it for payments and keep the voided check for your records. Additionally, update your check register accordingly.

To void a check, take a blank check and write the word “VOID” clearly in large letters across the front, covering the payment lines. Make sure it can’t be used. Keep a record of the voided check in your checkbook. This is often used for direct deposit setup.

Use an unused check and write VOID in large letters across the front (over the payee and amount), don’t sign or fill any fields, and keep the routing/account numbers at the bottom legible. Optionally write “For direct deposit only”, make a copy/scan for your records, and give it to your employer/bank via a secure method.

To void a check, write "VOID" in large letters on the front of the check. This makes the check invalid and no one can encash it.

To void a check:
  1. Lay the check flat and use a pen (no pencil).
  2. Write VOID in large letters across the front of the check — avoid covering the bank routing and account numbers if you’re providing it for direct deposit.
  3. Do not sign or write any amounts.
  4. Record the voided check in your check register (note date and reason).
  5. If sending the voided check, fold it once and mail or upload securely.
  6. Destroy any extra copies if not needed.
Use voided checks for direct deposit or automatic withdrawals and protect them like other financial documents.
