Solo law firm marketing | what actually works in 2026?

I'm a solo lawyer, 2 years in. I've tested Google Ads, set up my Google Business Profile, and have a basic website — but I'm still not sure where to focus.

From what I'm seeing, most marketing advice online is written for firms with staff and budgets. That's not us.

For solo attorneys running their own practice, what's actually driving clients right now?

Specifically curious about:

1. Local SEO — Is optimizing your Google Business Profile still the highest-ROI move for a solo lawyer?

2. Legal directories — Are Avvo, FindLaw, or Martindale still worth paying for in 2026?

3. Referral networks — How much of your caseload comes from other attorneys vs. online search?

4. Content/blogging — Have writing practice-area articles actually brought in clients, or is it too slow?

5. Paid ads — Google Ads vs. LSAs (Local Service Ads) — which performs better at a solo budget?

Just honest takes from other solo practitioners and digital marketing professionals, who've figured out what works.

Two years in as a solo attorney is the perfect time to get this figured out. Here's what's actually working in 2026.

GBP - Yes, still the best way to get the highest ROI. Fully optimized and driving more calls than anything else with no ad spend. Most solo attorneys set this up and then ignore it. This is a huge mistake.

Legal directories - Getting free listings on Avvo, Justia, and FindLaw is worth the effort. Paid options are questionable but may be worth it in some niches and practice areas.

Referrals - This is way underrated. Attorneys in complementary practice areas, bail bondsmen, financial planners. This is often the best way to get more cases than any other source.

Content - This is slow but compounds over time. Articles answering the questions your clients are searching for at 11 pm on a Sunday night can drive a ton of business over time.

Paid ads - LSAs are better than Google Ads for most solo firms with limited budgets. More predictable model than pay per click for limited budgets.

Here is a really detailed guide from attorney-rankings. com that is specific to solo firm marketing that covers all of this in a lot more depth: https://attorney-rankings.com/blogs/solo-law-firm-marketing

Worth going through before spending another dollar on anything. GBP and referrals first. Then everything else.
