I’m new to accounting and want to understand the fundamental principles. What are the main accounting principles, and why are they important?

Basic accounting principles include consistency (using the same methods over time), accrual (recording income and expenses when earned or incurred), matching (aligning expenses with related revenue), prudence or conservatism (avoiding overstatement of profits), and going concern (assuming the business will continue operating), ensuring reliable and comparable financial reporting.

Key principles: accrual basis, consistency, going concern, matching, revenue recognition, prudence (conservatism), materiality, and full disclosure. Together, they ensure financial statements are accurate, comparable, and transparent for decision-making.
