I saw “M$” used in a report and wasn’t sure what it stands for. Does it mean millions of dollars or something else? How is it commonly used in finance?

In finance, “M$” usually just means “million dollars” (like $5M = $5 million), though sometimes people also use it informally to refer to Microsoft (since its ticker is MSFT). In most financial reports or discussions, though, it’s almost always about money, not the company.

M$ means “millions of dollars” (e.g., 5 M$ = $5,000,000). It’s informal shorthand in finance. Sometimes “M” alone denotes thousands (Roman numeral), so context matters; in modern usage, “M$” typically refers to millions.

M$ stands for millions of dollars in finance. The abbreviation is made up of a symbol representing one million (“M”) and the monetary unit (“$”). For instance, M$5 is equal to five million dollars. It is widely used in reports and budgets to avoid wordiness.
