I’ve been studying history and politics and want a clearer understanding. What is imperialism, and how has it impacted different countries around the world?

Imperialism is when a powerful country expands its control over other regions, either by colonizing them directly or dominating them politically and economically. Whether it was “bad” depends on perspective, but for the people being controlled, it usually meant loss of land, culture, freedom, and often exploitation or violence. Some argue it brought infrastructure or modernization, but that was mostly to benefit the empire, not the locals, so overall it’s widely seen as harmful.

Imperialism is basically when one country takes control of another, usually for economic or political gain, and it's had a huge impact on many countries throughout history. I think it's safe to say that imperialism has been pretty bad for the countries being colonized, as they often lost control over their own affairs and were exploited for their resources. You can see the effects of imperialism still today, with many countries struggling to recover from the legacy of colonialism, and it's definitely worth learning more about if you're interested in history and politics.

Imperialism can be defined as the practice whereby a dominant nation acquires influence or control over another region or territory through either political, economic, or military means. While many scholars have criticized this approach due to exploitation, destruction of cultures, use of forced labor, and deprivation of independence on the part of colonizers, there are those who hold the view that imperialism brought about some form of development through infrastructure and trade.
