What is internal audit and how does it work?

I’m trying to understand what is internal audit and how it helps organizations monitor financial processes. How is internal audit different from external audit, and who usually performs it within a company?

Internal audit is an independent review process that digs deep into an organisation's operations, controls, and risk management to make sure everything is running smoothly - and if it's not - to help get it on track. It's all about accuracy, following the rules, and getting the most out of your resources.

Internal audit is a process of independent evaluation within an organization, where financial records, processes, and controls are reviewed to ensure their accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with established policies and procedures. Auditing is a process where internal audit is included. Through internal audit, risks, fraud, or weaknesses in processes can be identified, which can help improve decision-making processes within an organization.
