What is the difference between W2 and W4 forms?

I’m confused about the difference between W2 and W4 forms. I recently started a new job and had to fill out a W4, but at the end of the year, I received a W2. Can someone clearly explain the difference between W2 and W4, what each form is used for, and how they affect my tax withholding and tax return? I want to make sure I’m filing correctly and not missing anything important.

The main difference between W-2 and W-4 forms is their purpose. W-2 forms are used to report annual income and taxes withheld by an employer, while W-4 forms are used to determine how much income tax should be withheld from an employee's paycheck. Think of W-2 as a report card for taxes and W-4 as a request to withhold the right amount of taxes.

  • W-4 Form: Filled out by an employee when starting a job to tell the employer how much federal tax to withhold from each paycheck.
  • W-2 Form: Provided by the employer at the end of the year showing total earnings and how much tax was withheld, used to file your tax return.
In simple terms: W-4 controls withholding, W-2 reports what happened.
