I’ve heard a lot about rights related to free speech. What is the first amendment, and what freedoms does it protect? Does it apply everywhere or only in certain countries?

The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects five core freedoms: speech, religion, press, assembly, and petitioning the government. It specifically prohibits the government from infringing on these rights. While iconic, it applies only within the United States; other countries have their own distinct laws regarding expression.

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees fundamental freedoms: religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. It prevents the government from interfering with these rights, ensuring individuals can express ideas, practice beliefs, and challenge authority without undue restriction.
