How to cash in savings bonds

I’ve been looking into how to cash in savings bonds, but there seem to be different rules depending on the type, age, and issuer of the bond. Some people say you can cash them at a bank, while others mention online redemption or specific government portals.

The savings bonds can be deposited or cashed at any bank or credit union with a valid ID. In the case of electronic bonds, redeeming them is possible using your TreasuryDirect account and the funds are deposited into your bank.

You can redeem them at any bank or by TreasuryDirect with the face value of the bond plus interest interest and you have to meet minimum holding period and identification conditions.

To cash savings bonds, visit your bank or financial institution with proper ID; for certain bonds, you may also redeem them online via the issuer’s portal or a trusted financial service — check bond terms.
