I’ve seen the word used in both religious and casual contexts. What does myth mean in an academic sense, and how is it different from simply calling something untrue?

A myth is a traditional story that explains natural events, cultural beliefs, or the origins of the world. Myths often involve gods, heroes, or supernatural forces. They are part of a society’s folklore and help express values, history, and shared understanding, even if they aren’t scientifically proven facts.

In accounting, "myth" can refer to a myth of control, which is a method used to calculate a company's profit and loss. It involves assigning certain costs to a specific period or project, even if the costs were incurred in a prior period.

A myth is a traditional story or belief that explains natural events, history, or cultural ideas, often involving gods or supernatural elements, but it can also mean a widely believed idea that isn’t actually true.
