What is a dependent variable in simple terms with examples?

I’m trying to understand basic concepts in math and statistics. Can someone explain what a dependent variable is in simple words? How is it different from an independent variable, and can you share a few real-life examples to make it clearer?

A dependent variable is basically the outcome or result that you're trying to measure or explain, it's the thing that changes in response to something else. For example, if you're studying how different amounts of fertilizer affect the growth of plants, the growth of the plants would be the dependent variable because it's the outcome you're measuring, whereas the amount of fertilizer would be the independent variable because it's the thing you're changing on purpose. Another example could be how the temperature outside affects the number of people who buy ice cream, in this case, the number of people buying ice cream is the dependent variable and the temperature is the independent variable.

"Hey guys, a dependent variable is basically the outcome or result of a situation. Think of it like a math problem: input (independent variable) + something that happens = output (dependent variable). For example, if the independent variable is the number of hours you study, the dependent variable is your grade on a test. Make sense?"

The dependent variable is the quantity measured in an experiment. This quantity varies due to changes in the independent variable. The example of dependent variables is plant growth depending on the amount of sunlight and test scores depending on the time spent studying.

Dependent variable is the outcome you measure in an experiment. It changes based on another factor. For example, plant growth depends on sunlight, and test scores depend on study time or practice level, which is independent variable’s effect observed here.

A dependent variable is what you measure in an experiment. It changes based on the independent variable. For example, plant growth depends on sunlight, or exam scores depend on study time. It shows the outcome or result of changes made.
