What is socialism?

I’ve heard the term socialism used a lot in political discussions. What is socialism, and how is it different from communism or capitalism? I’d appreciate a simple explanation.

Socialism is the type of economy and political system in which production is carried out and controlled collectively in various ways including ownership by the State and citizens, as the case may be, in order to eliminate social inequalities and ensure that basic needs are met in the planned activities of the society.

Socialism is an economic system where the means of production are owned and controlled by the community as a whole, rather than by individual people or corporations. This can be achieved through government regulation or public ownership of key industries. It's often associated with social welfare programs and a more equal distribution of wealth. The key difference between socialism and communism is that socialism allows for some private enterprise and individual freedom, whereas communism aims for a complete elimination of private property and social classes. Compared to capitalism, socialism tends to prioritize social equality and collective well-being over profit and individual gain.

Socialism is an economic system where major industries (like healthcare, energy, transport) are owned or controlled by the government or the public, with the goal of reducing inequality and providing basic services to everyone.

How it differs:
  • Capitalism: Private individuals/businesses own most industries; focus is on profit and free markets.
  • Socialism: Mix of public ownership and government regulation; aims for fairness and welfare.
  • Communism: Extreme form where the state (in theory, the community) owns everything and there’s no private property.
