I’ve heard that some U.S. states don’t have a sales tax, but I’m not sure which ones. Can someone provide a list of states with no sales tax and explain how this affects consumers and businesses in those states?

Delaware is the only U.S. state with no state or local sales tax. Residents and visitors benefit from tax-free shopping, which makes the state attractive for businesses and consumers. Other states like Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, and Alaska have no state sales tax but may allow limited local taxes.

The U.S. state with no sales tax is Delaware.
In addition to Delaware, a few other states also have no state-level sales tax:
  • New Hampshire
  • Montana
  • Oregon
  • Alaska (no statewide sales tax, but some localities may charge local taxes)
These states are popular for tax-free shopping and business advantages.

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon are the five U.S. states that do not levy a statewide sales tax. Individual municipalities may charge local sales tax in some areas, and property and income taxes may be higher in these states to offset the revenue loss.

Five U.S. states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. However, local jurisdictions in Alaska and Montana may impose their own sales taxes, while the others remain completely tax-free.

Delaware is one of the few U.S. states with no state sales tax. This makes it an attractive location for shoppers and businesses, as purchases are generally not subject to additional tax at the point of sale. The absence of sales tax is part of Delaware’s broader strategy to encourage economic activity and commerce within the state.

Delaware is the state in the U.S that does not impose sales tax.

Moreover, this battery of four states fail to impose sales tax of the state level as well, although some of them impose other local taxes or fees:

  • Delaware
  • New Hampshire
  • Montana
  • Oregon
  • Alaska (no state sales tax, although the sales tax may be imposed by local governments)

These states are among the favorites of tax-free shopping and some forms of business registrations.

Delaware has no sales tax at all.

Other states with no state sales tax include:
  • Alaska – No state tax, but some local areas charge sales tax
  • Montana – No sales tax
  • New Hampshire – No sales tax
  • Oregon – No sales tax
So if you're shopping or running a business, those are the most tax-friendly states!
